Scent is a spectrum - that's why we try to divide them into families. This isn't to box you in, but to give you something to grasp onto, to know what you're looking for next time.
The nine families below are not a textbook list, but rather those that actually live in our catalog with appropriate examples:
Here live grounding scents, dry, creamy, or moss-covered and rotten.
Something solid underfoot when the rest of the composition falls apart. Wood usually doesn't shout, but builds a strong foundation for accompanying ingredients.

Amber is an accord composed of resins (usually labdanum), vanilla, and spiced patchouli, compacted into a dense, warm base.
The amber accord is meant to evoke its namesake - it should shimmer with a million shades of orange and brown and radiate warmth.

White musk and synthetic animal musk are two completely different facets of an ingredient with the same purpose - to build up the composition and keep it in check.
Where white musk enhances purity and allows more ethereal nuances to settle on something stable, animalic musk dirties and clogs this stability, adding depth to more carnal and human nuances.

Gourmand scents mimic food (usually sweet ones)
Vanilla, caramel, milk, sugared fruits, but sometimes also bread and beets.
This doesn't mean these scents are infantile; everyone sometimes craves something crunchy!

One of the most extensive fragrance groups, hiding millions of different fractions and scent nuances.

Citrus notes are the freshest and fastest disappearing opening of a composition; it's hard to elevate them to high performance.
What they lack in longevity, however, they provide in pure vigor, which they introduce to the composition. This is undoubtedly the most invigorating fragrance family in our portfolio.

Smoky and incense notes come from burnt wood and resins. Dark, often ritualistic scents somewhere between a Catholic church and a forest bonfire.
Per fumum - the Latin source of the word "perfume" literally means "through smoke". Here, we return to the roots.

Marine notes are salt, iodine, and among the more abstract, e.g., sea breeze - coolness, space, and licking walls in Wieliczka.
Hair stuck with salty water, sunscreen on the skin, and down we go into the mine.

A family where we don't focus on natural aromas, but on what synesthetic heights we can achieve by navigating the currently available palette of perfumery ingredients.
They don't fit into any of the above families, and that's the point. "Digital musks," the scent of Windows Vista, something that smells like a sound - we play with impressions and don't go into details because they are of little importance here.

It's a way of classifying perfumes by their dominant scent character, e.g., woody, floral, or gourmand. It makes it easier to compare compositions and find similar scents, even between different niche brands.
Top notes are the first, fastest-disappearing impression – often citrus. Heart notes emerge after a few minutes. Base notes linger the longest and are what stay on the skin for hours. However, many compositions forgo this division in favor of its complete absence.
Colloquially, these are compositions built on single, synthetic fragrance molecules instead of natural extracts.
No. The division into "masculine" and "feminine" is a marketing convention and nothing more. At Dziwne Wody, we don't use it - every fragrance family is for anyone who wants to try it.

"Niche" fragrances are either created by smaller, independent perfumery houses, usually without the pressure to appeal to the widest possible audience, or they are intentionally created for a small target group (even by larger brands), hence their more daring and unconventional compositions.
Yes, this is normal, so a fragrance after an hour may smell distinctly different than immediately after spraying. That's why it's worth testing perfumes on the skin, not just on a blotter.
